How to Clean Your Handpan

Essential Cleaning and Maintenance Tips for Your Mudra Handpan

Keeping your Mudra Handpan looking flawless and in prime condition requires some basic cleaning and maintenance habits. Check out our top recommendations below.

1. Apply a protective oil layer

To prevent oxidation, always maintain a thin layer of coconut oil or Phoenix Oil on your instrument. This protective barrier helps shield the Handpan’s surface from external elements and preserves its finish.

2. Remove dust before applying the oil

Before applying oil, remove any dust using a clean microfiber cloth. Follow these steps:

  • Use gentle and uniform movements to avoid scratching the surface.
  • Once the dust is removed, use another part of the cloth or a second cloth exclusively for applying the oil. Alternatively, you can designate one cloth for cleaning and another solely for the oil.

3. Clean your Handpan with isopropyl alcohol every three months

We recommend performing deeper cleaning on your Handpan every three months using isopropyl alcohol and a microfiber cloth. Here’s how:

  • Apply the isopropyl alcohol onto the cloth, never directly onto the instrument.
  • Clean the instrument using gentle movements and avoid the edge area where the two sides of the Handpan are glued together.
  • After cleaning, apply a fresh thin layer of oil as instructed in Step 2.
